In ancient times, there were many treatments for male pattern baldness. In Egypt, people would eat a mixture of honey, onions and lead to try and treat baldness. In ancient Greece, an accepted baldness treatment was a mixture of horseradish, pigeon droppings and opium. These supposed treatments may sound ridiculous, but they highlight the fact that baldness has never been seen as an attractive quality, and the desire to remedy it has been around for a long time.
Today we base our treatments on scientific research, and provable results. To treat, we must first understand. Androgenic alopecia, or male pattern baldness, is caused by a hormone called DHT. DHT is a super concentrated form of testosterone, created by a substance called enzyme-5a. While DHT is very important to male development during childhood, it goes largely unused and begins to build up. One of the places DHT builds up in our bodies is the scalp, where it attaches itself to hair follicles. With DHT attached to the scalp, blood flow to the follicles is severely limited and they cannot receive the nutrients that they need. This first results in hair thinning and becoming brittle, hair begins to fall out around the bald spot at the top of the head and forms a widow's peak at the forehead. Eventually it falls out in a horse shoe pattern.
Once this has process has already taken place, one of the most popular solutions is to have hair transplant surgery, but not everybody can or will go under the knife. Hair transplants cost thousands of dollars, and not everybody has that type of money to spend on their appearance. Hair transplants are also quite painful, and there is a long period between beginning a hair transplant and its completion where it is done in small circular patches and looks very unsightly. It is not recommended to leave the house during this period without a hat.
Understanding the process of hair loss due to DHT, modern non-surgical hair loss treatments work to combat DHT. Most prescription drugs actually limit your production of DHT, but this of course will have other effects than the treatment of baldness. Among these side effects are a decreased sex drive, swollen prostate and less serious side effects such as rash and itchiness. They are also very expensive. A much better method of treating male pattern baldness is not to stop hormone production, but to stop DHT from binding to hair follicles. This is the theory behind most natural supplements.
Natural supplements have no side effects, they support a healthy prostate and sex life as well. By toughening the hair follicles and preventing DHT from binding to them, they can begin to recover. Once this process has started, these supplements contain special vitamins and nutrients to encourage hair growth and hair health. The sooner hair loss is noticed, the quicker it will be treated. As said, the supplements stop DHT from binding to the scalp, so the less DHT in your scalp the easier it will be to rid yourself of it.
